From Thought to Form

An exploration of tectonic envelopes and molten cores

In the portfolio presentation of the Volcano Collection, the central dialogue revolves around the duality of silence and fire—how a minimalist, dark outer shell restrains the violent surge of interior light. However, the formal origin of this series stems from a core architectural question: How can a ceramic vessel transcend its functional origin to become a spatial event?
Influenced by formalist principles, the intention was to allow form to emerge directly from the purity of the material, stripped of all decorative narrative. The crater-like geometry is not a literal imitation of a natural volcano; rather, it reproduces the physical tension of tectonic energy trapped in clay. The dark matte exterior acts as structural ‘concrete,’ establishing a rigorous relationship between the protective envelope and the expressive core.

Kiln Alchemy & The Luster Legacy

The internal radiance of the Volcano series is achieved through the ancient technique of luster glazing—a process where chemistry transforms into alchemy within the kiln. Luster is inherently volatile; it is an unpredictable interaction between reduction firing, oxygen control, metallic oxides, and extreme heat.
Rather than repeating historical Persian motifs, the Volcano series revives the primal spirit of traditional lusterware. In the reduction environment of the kiln, metallic ions settle on the surface, capturing light in a shifting, iridescent state. What emerges is not a static object, but a frozen moment of chaotic birth—where the architect’s structural control yields to the untamed nature of fire.

In the Volcano series, the medium is no longer a carrier of messages, but the message itself. By stripping away the ornament, I have sought the ‘Zero Degree’ of form—where the clay doesn’t represent an eruption, but becomes one. It is a dialogue between the structural discipline of architecture and the raw, untamed energy of organic matter; a quest for a purity that exists only at the intersection of silence and fire

Dialogue with Contemporary Space

When integrated into a modern interior, a piece from the Volcano collection functions as a tectonic anchor. The raw, dark exterior and the radiant metallic crater continuously interact with natural light throughout the day. It serves as an assertion that true authenticity in contemporary art and architecture is not found in applied ornament, but in the honest, unfiltered expression of matter.

Form at its zero degree
